Who doesn’t love a game that throws you in at the deep end? Well Final Fantasy 16 certainly does that. With several tough fights pretty early on in the game.
One of these fights saw the return of Morbol or otherwise known as Malboro in other Final Fantasy games.
As young Clive ventures into the marshes during the “Lost in Fog” questline, he stumbles onto some Goblins. Once he dispatches these, he finds the leader and soon makes a run to get him.
The Goblin leader taunts Clive, but all of a sudden a giant Morbol comes crashing out.
Needless to say, the Goblin is no more…
The Morbol in the Final Fantasy series has typically been pretty tough to defeat.
So you can imagine what I thought as soon as I saw it at such an early part of the game.
Luckily for us, it’s not too difficult. As long as you learn its moves.
It has its iconic bad breath attack, which you’re told to keep out of. Although compared to previous games, it’s not that bad. It doesn’t even cause any status changes.
Having said that, it’s a pretty lengthy fight. The aim of this article is to help show you how to beat Morbol boss in Final Fantasy 16.
How To Beat the Morbol boss in Final Fantasy 16
Like the previous boss fight, Morbol is pretty slow to move and you can avoid its attacks fairly easily.
As long as you learn its moves and now how to counter them, it’s not overly complex.
Compared to previous monsters, its health is pretty large so don’t be afraid to use those abilities and get it staggered.
Before you are able to defeat Morbol, it’ll enter three different phases and have different attacks.
Let’s go through each phrase below;
Morbol Boss Phase 1
In phase one Morbol has two musical attacks. The first is attacking you with its tentacles by lifting them up and to the side to try and take a swipe at you.
There are two ways to avoid damage, the first is moving back away from Morbol. The other is using R1 to dodge the attack.
The second attack also uses its tentacles, however this time Morbol puts them into the ground.
They’ll then come up underneath you, which you’ll want to avoid.
This attack is a little harder to dodge, so it might be easier to just move out of the way.
Morbols main attack in this phrase is a well-known one. Its “Bad Breath” attack. Now it will hurt you if it hits you, but you won’t suffer the same status effects you would in previous titles.
Having said that, you should avoid its breath, and the NPC even continues to tell you that as well.
As soon as Morbol starts to breath in, move to the back of it and continue attacking whilst avoiding the attack.
This phrase will continue until you stagger the boss. Once ots staggered spam the square button like crazy and use R2+Square to use your Rising Flames attack.
Morbol Boss Phase 2
Morbols attacks change a little bit in this phrase. There will be times that it’ll shoot out black goo. These will slow you down if you go into them, so try and avoid them.
They do hang around for a while so you need to make sure you move around a bit.
This phase introduces a new combat mechanism and that is cinematic strikes. Morbol will lift its head and then go down into the water. It will then randomly pop up and start sucking everyone towards it.
You’ll need to hit square when it tells you to, this will then do a cinematic attack.
Something to note is that it can cause damage when it lifts up its head to start the attack, so it’s worth making sure you’re out of the way.
Morbol then has an AoE attack that you cannot dodge, you can see it doing this attack as it’ll breath in for 2 seconds.
The only way to avoid this attack is to move as far back from it as possible.
Overall in this phase you need to move around a lot and dodge, as even its single attacks can end up becoming double hits.
Morbol Boss Phase 3
The third phase is very much the same as the second phase. You’ll know you’re in the last phase as it’ll introduce a new attack called “Wild Rage”.
If you get caught by this attack, it will hurt….a lot…..so avoid it.
When Morbol uses this attack, it’ll come towards you for 5 seconds and continue attacking whilst doing so.
Since it has so many attacks it’s not possible to dodge them. The best way to avoid getting hit, is to just be well out of the way. Using the dodge button to move backwards can be really useful to get away quicker.
After it does this move it will become staggered. When it does, hit it like crazy to do as much damage as possible.
Depending on how long the fight lasts, Morbol might do its Wild Rage a few times.
Just keep slashing away at it until it’s been defeated.
What’s The Reward For Defeating The Morbol Boss in Final Fantasy 16?
Since Morbol is one of the first bosses, I wouldn’t be expecting a lot from rewards.
You’ll get yourself some experience and some ability points. So you could check your abilities and see which ones to invest the points into.
That’s all the rewards you get, no gold, no trophy, no fanfare. But it’ll feel good to get it down and defeated!
So there you have it, how to beat the Morbol boss in Final Fantasy 16.
It was great having such a big and exciting fight so early on in the game, showing just how the rest of the game is going to be.
